- Oprah Winfrey is donated $2 million dollars to Puerto Rico as they struggle to recover from Hurricane Maria.
- She was inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work on the island.
- A million will go to the Hispanic Federation and a million will go to the Flamboyant Arts Fund.
Since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, the island has been struggling to recover. Oprah Winfrey has stepped up to assist with restoration.
The media queen is reportedly donating two million dollars – one million to the Hispanic Federation and another million to the Flamboyant Arts Fund. She was inspired to make the contribution after seeing Broadway star and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring “Hamilton” to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up.
“I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty, and heritage,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real, and the work that has already been done by the Hispanic Federation, Flamboyant Arts Fund, and other organizations on and off the island is long from over.”
