The Beal City boys have been unstoppable since the turn of the new year, and that continued Thursday night with a 42-point win over Montabella.
The Aggies came into the contest at 9-2, winners of 5 straight games. Montabella came in at 7-4, and winners of 2 straight themselves. A team that Cam Gatrell is far too familiar with, as Coach Gatrell spent 11 seasons with Montabella prior to coaching the Aggies.
Both teams battled early, with Senior Austin Small drilling three triples in the first quarter as the Aggies would lead at the end of the first 16-8. The second quarter was the explosion, as the Aggies outscored the Mustangs 27-7 in the 2nd, to lead at the half 43-15.
Junior Guard Drake Gatrell had 12 points in the quarter to lead the Aggies. Small was right behind him with 11.
The second half was cruise control for the Aggies, as 9 different players would put the ball in the bucket for Beal by the end. The team also hit 10 total three-pointers.
The cruise control came off right at the end of the contest as Garrison Zuker slammed on the gas pedal and threw down a BIG DUNK in transition with just over a minute to play.
The Aggies would go on to win 72-28, and reach double digit wins on the season.
Austin Small led the Aggies with 21 points including 4 three-pointers. Drake Gatrell had 16 points, including several steals.
Many other Aggies contributed offensively – with Garrison Zuker putting in 9, Sophomore Cuyler Smith hitting two threes to finish with 7, and Senior Cole Tilmann added 6.
Also finishing with 6 was Senior Forward Kyle Martin, who was playing in his first game of the season after dealing with injury prior. A great way to break in the shoes for K-Mart, as he knocked down his first two triples.
And we can’t forget about Senior Owen McKenny, who was all over the place defensively for the Aggies wreaking havoc on the Mustangs, and dished out several dimes.
Montabella was led by Sophomore Brayden Foster who finished with 10.
Beal City moves to 10-2 on the season, and will return to Highland Conference play next Tuesday as they travel to face Lake City.
Our Local High School coverage continues tomorrow night, as the Mount Pleasant Girls host Davison in a SVL battle between unbeaten teams.
