It has been a season of streaks for the Mt. Pleasant Girls Basketball team, as a new one started last night with a 59-35 win over Saginaw United.
The Oilers Girls came into the game 10-5 overall, dropping three straight games to the likes of Midland Dow, Saginaw Heritage and Midland High. Prior to those three games, the Oilers had won 8 in a row with impressive close wins over teams like Flint Powers-Catholic, Big Rapids, and more.
The Key for the Oilers to turn things around heading into last night? Being back at home.
Mt. Pleasant came into the contest 6-1 on the season in their own gym, with the only loss coming to the SVL-undefeated, Midland High, by just 8 points.
The Oilers had a home game taken away from them last Friday having to travel to Midland Dow rather than host them as originally scheduled, so you know Coach French and company were happy to return to home.
The start of the action on Tuesday night was all Oilers, as they jumped out to a quick 15-0 start through the first 6 minutes of the game. Seniors Jordyn Egger and Ava Petrino drilled a few threes in the first as Mt. Pleasant led 20-8 after 8.
In the second, it was the third member of the Oilers Star Senior Trio to get involved, as Bella Colores sunk several shots from the stripe, and a few other buckets to end the quarter with 9 points – and Mt. Pleasant led 31-20.
The second half is where things really took off for the Oilers, as they would get hot from the mid-range and behind the arc – and explode for a 24 Point Quarter and allow only 8 defensively.
Jordyn Egger couldn’t seem to miss from the mid-range and Ava Petrino, Bella Colores & Lizzie Laney each added a triple in the third as the Oilers led 55-28 headed into the 4th.
Mt. Pleasant would cruise through the final eight and go onto win 59-35 to break the losing streak, and pickup a nice momentum win at home.
Jordyn Egger led the way with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals – hitting 3 threes and several mid-range jumpers.
Bella “the Bandit” Colores finished with 14 points, 3 assists, and of course added in 2 steals.
Ava Petrino hit 2 triples to finish with 12 points, and added in 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.
Lizzie Laney finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 2 big blocks.
Brittany Johnson had a big game for the Phoenix, finishing with 20 points to lead United.
Mt. Pleasant advances to 11-5 overall, 6-3 in the Saginaw Valley League, and 7-1 at home. Next up for the Oilers is a trip to Flint Carman-Ainsworth this Friday.
Next up on our local high school coverage is TONIGHT, Wednesday, February 12th as the Beal City Boys take on Manton for Senior Night.
