The dominant season of Andrew Doerr’s Sacred Heart Girls Basketball team continued Monday with a 54-29 Regional Semifinal Win over Onekama.

The Irish came into the contest 20-0, winning their 6th straight District Title on Friday.

The MHSAA 5th Ranked Irish were back at home to host their Region, and they had one of their toughest opponents on the season in front of them – MHSAA 15th-Ranked Onekama – who came in at 20-4.

Things started like usual for the Irish, getting off to a quick lead in the first quarter thanks to star Sophomore Karis Terwilliger ripping off 9 straight points to end the quarter. Senior Point Guard Sophie Hauck also had 5 in the first frame – as the Irish led 19-6 after 1.

Onekama had a strong start to the 2nd – with Portager Sophomore Ava Mauntler scoring inside and out. The Irish would extend their lead by the end of the quarter however, leading 30-12 at the break. Terwilliger led the way with 16.

In the 3rd, teams went back-and-forth to start as Onekama cut the lead as low at 11. The Irish got hot from the mid-range, as Sophomore Sierra Wohlscheid drilled 3 jumpers inside the arc in a matter of a minute or two. Sacred Heart headed into the 4th up 40-25.

The final frame saw Terwilliger repeat her feat from the first, 9 straight points to open it up coming off of steals and pushing the pace off of rebounds. Karis had several and-ones and paint scores to flood the Irish lead – as they quickly had Onekama doubled up just a few minutes into the 4th.

Sacred Heart would close things out and go onto win 54-29 – heading to the Regional Title game for the second straight season.

Our JNR Engraving Player of the Game went to the Sophomore Stud Karis Terwilliger – who finished with 31 points on the evening. She dropped 30 in the District Semifinal game last Wednesday, and one-upped it tonight in the Regional Semifinal.

Sophie Hauck & Sierra Wohlscheid each added 6 for Sacred Heart.

Onekama was led by Ava Mauntler who finished with 11.

Next up for the Irish is a potential matchup of the year in the Regional Final – as they will face #3 ranked Fowler. The Eagles defeated Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary 62-21 following Sacred Heart’s win.

We will be on the call for that stellar showdown on Wednesday at 7pm.
