Winter is just about over, and construction season will soon arrive. MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) released its 2017 statewide road construction map on Monday. As expected, plenty of mid-Michigan motorists will feel the impact of road projects this summer.

The full map can be found at the state of Michigan website, but here are some projects we need to look out for locally:

  • U.S. 127 Business Route and North Mission Road in Mt Pleasant: Between May and July, MDOT plans to add a roundabout at the U.S. 127 Business Route and North Mission Road interchange. Detours, shoulder/lane closures and traffic shifts should all be expected.
  • U.S 127 in Gratiot County: Starting in March, crews plan to repave 2.8 miles of U.S. 127 between Van Buren and Begole Roads. So, expect traffic shifts and lane closures until the project wraps up in August.
  • M-46 in Montcalm County: In June, look for crews sealing chips on M-46 between Neff Road and the Montcalm/Gratiot county line. Expect lane closures, and the dreaded flag crews.
  • U.S. 10 and M-25 in Bay County: Anyone planning to travel west between June and August needs to be aware of the major resurfacing project on U.S. 10 between the Bay/Midland county line and Bay City. Look for frequent traffic shifts and lane closures throughout the summer months.

Please note that this list only reflects state-funded projects. Local projects, such as the Lincoln Street bridge in Mt Pleasant, aren’t included in the map. As local road commissions release their full lists of 2017 projects, we’ll keep you posted.

We all know road construction sucks! But, it’s a necessary evil to keep our infrastructure strong. So, please be patient with MDOT and the construction crews throughout the spring and summer months. Also, follow some of these tips to help keep construction zones safer and less congested for all Michigan motorists.
