The big screen edition of “Downton Abbey” managed to beat Brad Pitt AND Sylvester Stallone’s new movies for the top spot in the box office over the weekend. “Downton Abbey” raked in $31-million for its debut, easily earning the top spot against Pitt’s “Ad Astra” and Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood.”
The debut marks the best opening for Focus Features in its 17-year history. But given the star power of the other debuts, its success was still a little surprising. Pitt and Stallone’s movies made more than $10-million less than “Downton,” sitting in the second and third spots, respectively. That’s not great news for “Ad Astra” given its budget of $100-million.
After three weeks in theaters, “It: Chapter Two” is still luring in fans, sitting in the fourth spot with nearly as much earnings as “Ad Astra” and “Rambo.” “The Lion King” just hit week 10, and it’s still going strong in the sixth spot.
Here’s this weekend’s Top 10 movies:
- “Downton Abbey” – $31-million
