As you’ll recall, Doris Day passed away at 97 this week. She’s survived by her grandson Ryan Melcher, child of Day’s late son Terry Melcher.Ryan says he was supposed to see her prior to her death… but that the late star’s manager didn’t let him.
In fact, Ryan has been so disconnected that he only found out about her death along with the rest of the world. Taking to Facebook, he has nothing but heartwarming things to say about the late icon. But he claims he’d been cut off from seeing or even contacting his grandmother ever since his parents got divorced when he was young.
For example, a few years back Ryan and Day were supposed to have dinner together… but when the day came, her “business manager” – presumably Bob Bashara, who also serves as the financial officer for her Doris Day Animal Foundation – refused to let him see her. Ryan notes that he “later learned” that this unnamed business manager had fired members of the Foundation’s board and replaced them with “his direct family.”
- “It seemed I was not the only one who had been cut out,” he writes. “I should have done more… but I could not bring myself to continue to fight an uphill battle at the expense of her well-being or my family’s.”
