Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial is moving towards its conclusion. His defense team took the stage with their closing arguments yesterday reiterating their claim that all of Weinstein’s encounters were consensual.
Defense attorney Donna Rotunno argued that jurors ought to be willing to make an unpopular decision. “You don’t have to like Mr. Weinstein,” she told the jury. “This is not a popularity contest. We are not here to criminalize morality.”
Rotunno also challenged the stories by six female accusers, saying the women “lacked common sense and responsibility” for the men they flirted with and hotel rooms they went to. The prosecution is expected to give closing arguments today, with jury deliberations starting on Tuesday.
The arguments of Weinstein’s defense team had him striding out of the courtroom pretty confidently. So much, in fact, that he didn’t appear to need his walker. He walked much taller than throughout the trial. When asked what he thought of Rotunno’s summation, he replied, “I loved it.”
