Now it can be told – “Weekend at Bernie’s” was based on a true story about the late John Barrymore.
According to Drew Barrymore, her grandfather’s friends Errol Flynn, WC Fields, and Sadakichi Hartmann took his body from the morgue and propped it up at a poker table after his death in May 1942. “I hope my friends do the same for me,” she joked. “That is the kind of spirit I can get behind. Just prop the old bag up and have a last few rounds.
And for the record, Drew – whose talk show premieres on September 14th – added, “I think death comes with so much morose sadness, and I understand that, but if it’s okay, just with me, if everyone can be really happy and celebratory and have a party, that would be my preference.”
