Guitarist and J. Geils Band frontman J. Geils died on Tuesday at the age of 71. Police found dead in his home during a well-being check. But preliminary reports indicate he died from natural causes.
The J. Geils Band burst onto the scene in the late seventies and early eighties with a slew of albums. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t Geils voice that delivered the band’s biggest hits, but rather vocalist Peter Wolf. Wolf took to his Facebook page on Tuesday mourning the loss of his former bandmate, writing “Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house! R.I.P. Jay Geils.”
Geils and Wolf, along with bandmate Richard Salwitz delivered huge hits throughout the eighties, including “Centerfold,” “Love Stinks,” “Come Back” and “Freeze-Frame,” all staples on My 1043 today. Unfortunately, success proved to be too much for the band, and they fell apart in 1985.
