My1043 is proud to be Mid Michigan’s #1 home for high school sports following Beal City, Mt Pleasant, Mt Pleasant Sacred Heart, Shepherd, and Clare. We would love to bring you every district game, but that’s just not possible so here is a brief overview of each teams district. We will start with the girls: District play begins February 26th
Mt Pleasant: The oiler Girls have it rough again in districts after having a nice regular season. Sam Taylor is the Co Mid Michigan Girls Coach of the Year along with Damon Brown after leading his very young squad to a 10-9 record with one game left in the regular season. The oiler girls open district play vs top ranked Saginaw Heritage Monday night. Heritage defeated Mt Pleasant 66-20 earlier this season. If Mt Pleasant pulls of the major upset Midland High awaits in the district semifinal.
Shepherd: The lady jays may be in the toughest district in Class B with 17-2 host Big Rapids, 14-5 Alma, a solid 11-8 Clare team, and unbeaten Stanton Central Montcalm. Shepherd is currently 5-13 on the year playing against top notch competition in the Tri Valley. That tough schedule could serve them well as they play the winner of Clare vs Chip Hills Wednesday the 28th. The other side of the district is loaded with the for-mentioned teams. Unbeaten Stanton Central Montcalm is the favorite in the district.
Clare: The lady Pioneers are in the same boat as Shepherd with that loaded district. Finishing over 500 with a tough schedule playing Sacred Heart, Gaylord St Mary, and Manton. This team will be favored over Chip Hills in their opener, and will also be favored if they play Shepherd Wednesday. Friday may be a tough test in the district final, against most likely Stanton Central Montcalm.
Beal City: Beal has the good fortune of hosting their district. They also have the opposite situation of Shepherd and Clare. The only team with a winning record in this district is Morley Stanwood which makes them the favorite. Brad Antcliff and his young Aggie team will fight hard Wednesday playing the winner of Lakeview and Leroy Pine River. If the Aggie Ladies win Wednesday they will most like face Morley in the district title game, who defeated Beal City 40-35 in the first game of the season.
Sacred Heart: Sacred Heart is the one local team that will be favored in their district. Damon Brown and the girls finished the season at 20-0, just the second unbeaten season in their girls hoops history! They will open play Wednesday the 28th vs the winner of Baldwin vs Big Rapids Crossroads. If the Irish win on Wednesday, they will most likely face a strong 14-5 McBain NMC team. If that game happens you can listen to it right here on My1043.net!
Now let’s get into boys hoops…Which will open district play March 5th
Clare: Clare has been great this year using an incredible scoring balance, they had 4 players in double figures in a win vs Sacred Heart this season. They will finish second in the Jack Pine Conference behind Sanford Meridian. At 15-3 heading to the final week of the season they will be favored to get to the district finals opening up districts Monday the 5th of March at Chip Hills vs Shepherd. If they win that game they will be heavily favored vs Stanton Central Montcalm. The other side of districts features 6-12 host Chip Hills with a bye and 14-4 Alma facing 14-3 Big Rapids in the district opener Monday the 5th. This district opener will be a fantastic game!
Shepherd: After starting the season 5-5 the bluejays have struggled down the stretch at 6-13 with a week left in the regular season. They have a tough district opener vs that 15-3 Clare squad, but if they can get by Clare they will face a so so Stanton Central Montcalm team, and could get some momentum going. Shepherd has faced Alma twice this year (likely district title opponent) with Alma winning both games by an average of 13 points.
Beal City: Beal City has had a solid season in a great Highland Conference and scheduled tough with Sacred Heart, Baldwin, and Morley Stanwood as out of conference opponents. They are 12-6 heading into the last week of the season. They will be favored to get to the district title game facing an Evart team they’ve defeated twice and a 7-11 Lakeview team waiting in the district semis. Morley Stanwood would most likely be Beal City’s opponent in that district tilte game. Beal fell to Morley by 15 earlier this year. On a side note; if Beal City plays their best…they can beat just about anybody.
Sacred Heart: It seems to be a yearly trip for the Irish to Big Rapids Crossroads, so it’s fitting they open district play at Crossroads, but the opening match up is going to be a tough one vs Baldwin who is 11-5 heading into the last week of the season. Whoever wins that game will be favored to win the district. Much like Beal City, the Irish are capable of beating just about anyone if they have a good night.
Mt Pleasant- it’s been a surprising year for this young oiler team. With three Sophomores and two juniors in the starting lineup, no one saw their great start coming. Their schedule has gotten more difficult at the end of this season, but that should have this young oiler team ready for the playoffs. At 11-4 heading into the final week of the season, they will open district play vs the winner of Midland High and Midland Dow. Mt Pleasant swept those teams in the regular season. It won’t be easy to get by a Midland rival, but if they do they could avenge a 2 point loss to Saginaw Heritage who was the first team to beat Mt Pleasant this year. However, that game was played at Heritage and Mt Pleasant will be home this time as they host districts!
Overall I expect one of our girls teams to win a district title and as many as three boys teams to win district championships! It should be a fun MHSAA playoff run on My 1043, for a schedule of our upcoming games click here!
