“The Lion King” roared its way to the first spot of the box office this weekend, raking in a record-breaking $185-million for its debut. Disney’s star-studded CGI-live-action remake of the classic 1994 original broke multiple box office records, most of them taking the crown from “Incredibles 2,” including:
Biggest Domestic Opening of All Time for a Disney Remake
Biggest Disney Opening of All Time Outside of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm
Biggest Domestic Launch Ever for a PG Pic, Animated or Otherwise
Biggest July Opening of All Time
As for the rest of the top 10, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is in the second spot after earning $21-million, with “Toy Story 4” trailing behind in third with $14-million. Meanwhile, “Aladdin” is still going strong after nine weekends, sitting in the seventh spot with almost $4-million in earnings.
“Avengers: Endgame” may have just been bumped out of the top 10, but it just hit a major milestone. The hit movie has officially dethroned “Avatar” as the highest-grossing movie of all time after crossing $2-point-7887-billion in the global box office. It took nine years for a movie to break that record.
