Emily Blunt has opened up about her struggle with a speech impediment, something. In her new March cover story for “Marie Claire,” the actress credits acting for “liberating” her from her stutter.

At 12-years-old, Blunt’s teacher encouraged her to join the school play. While you’d think acting on stage would be the last thing someone with insecurities about a stutter would want to do… it ended up being the best thing for the actress, who says, “suddenly, I had fluency.”

Overcoming her stutter is something Blunt says has made her and her children more empathetic. She encourages her kids to “embrace differences” rather than “being scared of them or teasing people.” “When you go through something like that, you establish a real sense of kindness,” she adds.
