Demi Lovato stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” yesterday where she opened up about some of the things that were happening in her life that led to her relapse and eventual overdose. The singer shared that she felt very “controlled” by her team, especially when it came to her struggle with an eating disorder, which she says was her “primary problem.”
“If I was in my hotel room at night, they would take the phone out of the hotel room so I couldn’t call room service,” she said. “Or if there was fruit in my room, they took it out because that’s extra sugar. We’re not talking about brownies and cookies and candies and stuff like that; it was fruit.”
She says all of this lead her to be “really really unhappy,” explaining, “My bulimia got really bad and I asked for help and I didn’t receive the help I needed.” She admitted that was what led her to drinking after six years sobriety. “I felt completely abandoned, so I drank,” she said. “That night I went to a party and there was other stuff there. And it was only three months before I ended up in the hospital with an OD.”
As for why she’s being so open about the decisions that led to her relapse, she shares, “I think it’s so important that I sit here on this stage and tell you at home or you in the audience or you right here that if you do go through this, you yourself can get through it.”
Demi says her team’s controlling behavior about her diet got so bad that on her birthday she was only allowed to eat a piece of watermelon “cake” with fat-free whipped cream. That’s why when she was surprised with a birthday cake last year by her manager Scooter Braun it meant so much to her. She shared, “I just remember crying because I was finally eating cake with a manager that didn’t need anything from me and that loved me for who I am and supported my journey.”
