Kevin Hart is speaking out about his decision to publicly defend his friends Ellen DeGeneres and Nick Cannon as they deal with separate scandals. In a new interview with “Deadline,” the comedian doubles down on his defense, as well as his distaste for cancel culture.

Hart’s dealt with his own dose of cancel culture, stepping down from hosting the Oscars in 2018 after old homophobic tweets resurfaced, so he knows how “dark” and “lonely” it can get. Hart’s take is that despite the accusations against his friends, he knows what kind of people they really are… but he also wonders “what happened to the days of making and learning from a mistake.”

“I don’t lose sight of the definition of friendship, and in our business, it’s one thing that people don’t really hold on to,” he adds. “There’s a lot of relationships that are fake, and there’s some that are real. In my case, the ones that are real are the ones that I’m always going to be adamant about speaking on behalf of.”
