he Midland City Council plans to interview the finalist that members have selected for the open city manager position.
The special meeting, open to the public, is set for 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at council chambers in City Hall, 333 W. Ellsworth St.
Brad Kaye, Midland’s assistant city manager who heads development services, is the sole finalist for the city manager position, Mayor Maureen Donker announced at an Aug. 7 meeting.
Kaye had indicated interest in the position earlier this year. He said he sent an application and other materials this summer and was notified he was a semi-finalist, but that he first heard the news that he was a finalist with the mayor’s announcement.
“I’m honored and humbled,” Kaye later told the Daily News. “Obviously, I’m excited. It’s a position I’m very much interested in. If it’s the right fit as they (city council) determine, I would very much look forward to working with them and the community in general.”
Donker said a national search for Midland’s new city manager attracted 39 candidates. The city council started the search in mid-February, after former City Manager Jon Lynch tendered his resignation. Lynch had been Midland’s city manager since 2006 and announced he would take a job as Three Rivers Corp.’s president on May 8.
Council members appointed Assistant City Manager David Keenan as interim city manager effective May 1. The city council later agreed to pay $27,000 to a consulting firm — Keller, Texas-based Strategic Government Resources — to help recruit a new city manager.
The salary for Midland’s new city manager could range from $132,000 to $170,000, as identified by the consulting firm. That range is comparable to salaries in other similar-sized cities, according to the city’s director of human resources and labor relations.
